Decorating with Mexican Loteria Tiles: Color, Culture, Memories & Personal Style

If you grew up playing Loteria, you probably remember more than just the game itself. Maybe it was getting together with family during the holidays, playing with your grandparents, or everyone laughing when someone called out the wrong card. Sometimes it's those little moments that stay with us.

For others, the colorful Loteria designs might bring back memories of a trip to Mexico. Maybe you remember seeing them in a market, a restaurant, or a little shop you visited.

And then there are people who have never played Loteria but simply love the artwork. The colors, the characters, and how different each design is.

That's one of the things I like about Mexican folk art. People can connect with the same piece for completely different reasons.

So if you've been thinking about decorating with Loteria tiles, here are a few ideas. You don't need a big project or a lot of space to enjoy them.

Create a Wall Display with Your Favorite Loteria Cards

One of the fun things about using Loteria tiles as Mexican wall decor is that you can choose the cards that mean something to you.

Maybe it's La Luna because that's your family name, or La Rosa because it reminds you of someone. Or maybe you just like the colors and want to put a few designs together.

You can start with two tiles displayed side by side, or arrange four in a square. If you have six, try two rows of three. With twelve tiles, you can create a larger display with three rows of four, or four rows of three. And with sixteen tiles, you can arrange them in a four-by-four square for an even larger display.

Before deciding where to place them, try laying the tiles out on a table or the floor. Move them around, switch a few designs, and see what looks good together. Sometimes changing the position of just one tile makes the whole arrangement look different.

You don't have to choose cards that match perfectly either. That's part of the fun of decorating with Mexican Loteria tiles. Some people like putting together designs with similar colors, while others prefer mixing different characters, objects, and symbols.

You Don't Need a Wall to Display Them

Not everyone wants to hang things on the wall, and sometimes you just want something small to add a little color.

A Loteria tile on a bookshelf, desk, kitchen shelf, or entryway table can be a simple way to add a touch of Mexican home decor.

For example, you could display La Luna next to a family photograph, put El Sol on a shelf with a small plant, or choose a card that reminds you of a trip to Mexico and place it alongside a souvenir you brought home.

You could also change the tiles throughout the year. Maybe you have a few favorite cards you like to display during family gatherings, or you just feel like switching things around every once in a while.

I especially like the idea of mixing things that have some meaning to you instead of trying to make everything match.

For this type of display, a small stand is an easy option. We offer clear and black acrylic stands, as well as a black wooden stand, so you can choose the look that works best for your space. The stands are sold separately.

You can also start with a pair of designs. Our 2-Piece Loteria Tile Sets are a good option if you want something coordinated without having to choose a larger collection.

Sometimes It's About the Memories

This is something I've always felt is important about Loteria.

For a lot of people, these cards bring back memories of growing up, playing with family, or spending time with grandparents. You might remember the food, the laughter, or someone in the family who always wanted to be the one calling the cards.

And sometimes a particular card reminds you of someone who isn't around anymore.

It's interesting how one card can mean something completely different to two people. La Rosa might remind someone of a family member named Rosa, while someone else might choose it because they love flowers. El Gallo, La Garza, La Luna, and La Corona might have a connection to family names, while other cards bring back memories of playing the game.

That's part of the thinking behind our Roots & Memories 12-Piece Loteria Tile Set.

We put that collection together with family, traditions, and those familiar memories in mind.

But you don't have to choose a whole collection for that reason. Sometimes one tile is enough, especially if it reminds you of someone or something special.

Choosing Tiles That Look Good Together

If you're not choosing tiles because of a particular memory or family connection, you can simply start with the designs you like.

Some Loteria cards have bright backgrounds, others have softer colors, and some have illustrations that really stand out.

One way to create a colorful Loteria tile display is to choose a few designs with similar colors. Another is to mix different designs and spread the brighter colors around so they don't all end up in one corner.

You can also choose a theme. Maybe you like animals, nature, or cards that remind you of places you've visited. Or you might prefer a combination of designs that don't necessarily have anything in common.

For a smaller arrangement, two tiles can be enough. With a larger display, you have more room to experiment.

If you enjoy putting together your own combinations, explore our individual Loteria tiles and choose the designs that catch your eye. You can start with a couple of favorites and build your collection over time.

Get Ideas from How Other People Decorate

I think one of the best ways to get decorating ideas is to see what other people have done in their homes.

Someone might arrange a few tiles on a shelf, while someone else might use a whole collection to create a colorful display.

And sometimes you see something completely unexpected that makes you think, "I never thought of using them that way."

That's what I enjoy about seeing customer photos. Everyone has their own style, and the same designs can look completely different depending on where and how they're displayed.

If you're planning a permanent installation, such as a backsplash or fireplace surround, it's important to check with a qualified tile professional first. Our Loteria tiles are sold as decorative display tiles, and not every tile is suitable for every installation.

A Little Reminder of Mexico

Not everyone connects with Mexican folk art in the same way.

For some, it's part of their childhood and family traditions. For others, it reminds them of places they've visited in Mexico, walking through a market, or finding something colorful in a little shop.

And some people just discover the artwork and fall in love with it.

I think that's one of the nice things about decorating your home. You get to choose things that remind you of places, people, or experiences you want to keep close.

At Casa Villa Arte, that's a big part of why we do what we do. We want to share Mexican folk art with people who appreciate it, whether they grew up surrounded by it or are discovering it for the first time.

Make It Your Own

You don't have to decorate an entire room or have a particular theme in mind.

Start with a design you like. Maybe add another one later. Put them somewhere you'll enjoy seeing them.

Whether it's a reminder of family, a favorite trip, or simply something colorful that makes you smile, that's reason enough to make room for it in your home.

You can explore our Mexican Loteria Tile Collection whenever you're ready to find your favorites.
